Living a hermetic existence in a depopulated village in Japan, Rai Tateishi has been able to refine his sound and completely focus on his craft, developing a relationship with his instruments that helps him transcend their usual limits. He's a master of the shinobue, an ancient bamboo flute, and plays in the popular performing arts ensemble Kodo, as well as cult avant-garde outfit goat (jp). But it's his solo material that unlocks his true potential; on 'Presence', Tateishi works with no overdubs, matching his shinboue sounds with freeform blasts of shakuhachi, khene mouth organ and Irish flute. And it's this performance he'll be bringing to Unsound Osaka, accompanied by Koshiro Hino, who will process the sound live.
